A. Howard Austin Feld
Howard Austin Feld, Miami’s premier fashion photographer during the city’s formative years as an international arts capital, pioneered digital photography. His studio was one of the first to move from film-based photography to digital captures in the 1990s. With the challenges of commercial success achieved, HAF pursued applications of digital technology to the human form. His was revolutionary practice, a forerunner of new approaches to art-making in this realm. It was also prophetic as life in Miami would imitate art, which established his new images as emblematic of the new Miami, the Miami of today. With Miami’s best fashion models collaborating with him, HAF photographed their toned bodies in striking formal ways, which he then edited using computer technology during an era when few were experimenting with its potential. The results were stunning. He was less concerned with improving the models good looks than transforming the images into rich, shocking markers of human sensuality. With media attention and the influx of international tourists complimented with a growing interest in new art in Miami, he established the signature Howard Austin Feld “Digital Photographic Art” Gallery along Miami Beach’s cultural center of Lincoln Road in 1997.
In recent years, HAF’s art focuses on the nude form in the environment, incorporating water, rocks and sky in fresh ways that transcend immediate images into timeless art. The photographs are printed with archival inks on 13×19” archival paper and limited in editions of 40 signed prints.
